While conflict arising in a stressful work environment may come as no surprise, applying effective conflict resolution methods in the workplace is important in ensuring costly impacts are kept at a minimum. Conflict resolution is a way for involved parties to collaborate on a solution that can be mutually beneficial to them and even the organization at large. But as you can imagine, with tension and emotions running high, it isn’t always easy to know where to begin working toward a solution.

Conflict Resolution Methods in the Workplace

While organizational conflict is to be expected, it should also be managed as swiftly and effectively as possible. In order to lead your team toward reduced conflict overall, here are some conflict resolution methods in the workplace that might make it easier to begin:

Accommodating

This method is meant to reduce further escalation and reach resolution as promptly as possible, but it does require one party giving up their needs entirely so that the problem can be eliminated. There are a few cases in which this method may be appropriate, especially in instances where one’s opinion or needs are not very strong or important and the sacrifice incurred by accommodating would be minimal or none at all. In this case, the gain from reaching solution would outweigh the loss.

Avoiding

Avoiding conflict is the method of ignoring it altogether, allowing those involved and in the peripheral to disregard the existence of a problem. Resolving conflict between employees doesn’t typically happen with great effect when its avoided, unless it’s clear that one party needs space to calm down without the flames being fanned by ceremony or intervention.

Compromising

To compromise means to allow for both parties to gain something toward their own end in the agreed upon solution. Each party will have to give up some of their conditions in order to make goals of the other party feasible. This can sometimes be a temporary solution until something more nuanced and permanent can be worked out, or it may be what’s needed when there isn’t a solution that entirely satisfies all involved. When personality conflicts in the workplace arise, management may step in to enforce a compromising solution upon recognizing that certain forfeitures won’t be possible and coexistence will need to be figured out in a mutually-sacrificing way.

Collaborating

Addressing conflict in the workplace is often best achieved when both parties are able to reach an understanding of each other and work together on a mutually-beneficial solution. Like compromising, this method usually leaves some sacrifice on the floor, but the give-and-take is born from working together and creating joint goals rather than finding a way for two individual sets of goals to exist together.

Competing

When learning how to solve conflicts at work, competing should not be your go-to. This is an uncooperative path that is led by aggressive behavior with a win-at-all-costs attitude that does not put the team first. This does not reduce conflict in the long-run and may, in fact, inspire more of it to come.
