Tip #2: Be Clear on Your Intentions

Published: March 15, 2021 | Last Updated: August 30, 2023by Jeremy Pollack

This week’s conflict resolution tip is about being clear on your intentions.

When you are making decisions that will impact others, it is important to ensure you are clear with your intentions. If people do not understand your intentions and are impacted by your decisions, then your actions run the risk of being negatively skewed due to underlying negativity bias people may hold. Instead of making decisions alone and not communicating with those who may be impacted, be sure to be open and honest with them about your thought processes. Let people know how your decisions will be beneficial to those involved or to the organization at large.

By being clear and explaining the intentions behind your decisions, and how you came to those decisions, there is a much lower risk of false and negative assumptions being made about your intentions. You want to ensure there is an alignment with your intentions and how your actions are perceived by others, and that is done with open communication from the start. Maintaining peace in personal and professional relationships becomes easier by having open and honest communication, to include setting your intentions first to clear up any possible misunderstandings that could follow your actions.
